The City of Brussels, capital and largest city in Belgium, is the epitome of a truly cosmopolitan city. It is home to European and world institutions such as the EU or the European Union, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), and the Western European Union.
It is a city of the world, or rather, it is the world in a city. Although both Dutch and French are considered as the national language in Brussels, there is not a street or plaza where you will not hear other world languages spoken fluently. Enter a cafe or a museum and you would see a multitude of faces from different races, from olive-skinned, rose-skinned to chocolate browned skinned, those with red, blond, brown and ebony black hair, blue, green, hazel, black and brown eyes, all of these features and languages are harmoniously mixed together in a cultural hodgepodge known as Brussels.
What better way to know people from other cultures and races than over a pint of beer? Like a few other European cities, Brussels is also known for its beer. Many consider it as one of the best, if not the best, makers of beer. Brussels fruit beers which mingle the distinct sweetness of cherry, peach, strawberry or raspberry with the undeniably delicious flavor of beer is served in the hundreds of bars, cafes and pubs found all over Brussels.
Belgium’s City of Brussels in considered as a crossroad to Europe, and this can easily be witnessed through the contrast of cultures, art and architecture adorning this European city. From plazas and squares such as the Koningsplein where tourists flock by their thousands to palaces and cathedrals like the Notre Dam Church of Laken and the King’s House, architectural styles from past eras remain very much alive. Fountains, statues and parks are situated all over the city, relics of the past’s artistry and the focus of tourists’ cameras and interest.
